Ride Description

Road Bike Rental San Francisco – Hawk Hill

40km - 670m / 25mi - 2,200ft - Daily Rides

This is the classic weekday morning ride for San Francisco cyclists. You will feel energised after this ride & if you are pushed for time it offers a great taster of the ride options open to serious cyclists in San Francisco.
Hawk hill is long enough and steep enough that you can kick your own butt as hard as you want to. The view from the summit is spectacular. From the city, head west to Aquatic Park, roll through Marina and warm up on the short climb up to the Golden Gate Bridge. Cross the bridge & start to climb Hawk Hill. The first 500m is quite steep. The climb levels a bit in the middle then climbs sharply to the summit. Lots of very good cyclists work very hard to put up a good time on this climb: KOM 6:00 We regroup at the top. The descent is gorgeous, and startlingly steep. In the blink of an eye you have gone from an urban setting to Wild-n-Remote. Just rock, road and water with a lighthouse in the distance. Loop around the historic Nike Missile sites, relics of WWII and the Cold War. Climb Rodeo Beach (a bit steep!) and come down on a small bit of dirt (totally road bikeable).
Return through tunnel. Climb Alexander back to bridge. Ride through Presidio backroads (great for feeling like you’re in a forest in the middle of the city!). Return through Lombard gate, and head back to the shop.

Want a longer ride? Check out our Muir Beach – Ridgecrest  ride –  approx 4 hours

Ride Leaders

John – San Francisco

John has been cycling in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 25 years. A Citizen Rider, his day job is CFO for a nonprofit serving homeless veterans. He has an affinity for climbing (and descending!) hills and has completed the Markleeville Death Ride five times, with five passes totaling 15,000+ feet of lung busting climbing over 129 miles. San Francisco is not the only beautiful city in the world, but it certainly is one of them & he believes a bike is the best way to see it. John’s deep knowledge of cycling and the city make him an ideal Ride Leader, and he's keen to exchange & share cycling experiences with travellers from around the globe.

Randy – San Francisco

Randy has lived in San Francisco now for 12 years. In his earlier life, he spent a lot of time as a mountain biker before making the transition to full-on roadie. Apart from the lycra, he likes the road and most of all likes climbing and descending. There isn’t much flat land around San Francisco, so this makes sense. Sometimes referred to as “handy Randy”, he can fix just about anything. His spirit animal is either a kewpie doll or a snake (though he’s not sure why), both of which he summons for strength during the cyclocross season. Last year he finished 5th overall in his category of older men. Apart from bikes, Randy works a day job in immigration, rides a Ducati Multistrada, & loves to eat.. lots!

Matt – San Francisco

As a maths student and collegiate cyclist on a national-championship-winning MIT Cycling Team, Matt was hooked on the numerical aspects of cycling from the start. His passion for adventure and exploration have led him back to his home town (San Francisco) where he currently works as a Data Scientist at Strava. Matt is the youngest “Everesting” finisher in the United States, climbing 8848 meters over 49 repeats of Hawk Hill in 20 hours, and currently races competitively on the SquadraSF amateur team. Matt loves to talk about his favorite Strava segments - come out and join him on a ride through his favorite environments! When he’s not riding, he enjoys puzzles and scavenger hunts, and loves programming, cooking and wrenching!
