A great variety of scenery and terrain await you on this loop through the northern San Diego countryside. Beginning in the beachside town on Encinitas, we ride north on Pacific Coast Highway along the water through Carlsbad and up to Oceanside.
Heading east, we have a nice flat 11km stretch on the San Luis Rey River trail, a dedicated bike and pedestrian path. At the end of the path, we quickly enter one of the remote agricultural areas of the county and into the rolling hills to Lilac Road. This is a beautiful gradual (mostly 3-5%) 3km climb with great views of the valleys surrounding the area. Continuing on to Old Highway 395, we head mostly south towards Escondido and a long drag up to Deer Springs Road where we can re-fuel.
A nice long descent brings us to the challenging climb over San Elijo Hills. This 3km climb starts pretty mellow and then quickly goes to a steady 9-10% for the second half. Another high point at the top provides great views. If you want a little more, we can continue up the short, but very steep road to Double Peak for awesome views from one of the highest points in the area. Dropping down, we begin the last leg back to Encinitas with 2 shorter climbs back to the coast and our finish. Get your climbing in on your trip with this nice 95km loop.
