Rome – Marcigliana
45km - 274m / 28mi - 900ft - Weekly Rides - Monday - Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday - Friday
- Region EMEA
- Country Italy
- City Rome
This is a short but complete ride where you will find bike lanes along the river Tiber in the heart of the city, and fast reserved bike lanes in the last sections before reaching the border of the city. We ride on countryside roads over sweet hills in the Marcigliana park (a natural Reserve are just outside the ring road of Rome) before returning through the main central avenues of downtown to reach the starting point again.
The Reserve covers a series of hills delimited in the west by the Tiber, in the south by Bufalotta ditch, in the north by Rio del Casale, which also marks the border with the Municipality of Rome. The low, rounded hills are still cultivated or used as pastures, while the valleys are covered with maquis vegetation.
The historical landscape system of the big estates is also extremely interesting (Marcigliana, Tor S.Giovanni), since it is characterized by ancient farmsteads, often built on nuclei of Roman villas, and by medieval towers creating a unique historical continuum.
It’s a ride that can be done CW or CCW according to traffic conditions, the gradients are similar on both ways of the hills;
the surface of the road may vary from the bike lane special tarmac, to the concrete road tarmac, up to grey old fashion asphalt of countryside roads.
All the rides in Rome are amazing, it’s hard to choose which to do:-

Leonardo – Ride Manager Europe – RomeAs his photo indicates, Leonardo is a local character and great rider for GCR in Rome. He is also our Ride Manager for Europe. As an A grade club rider and weighing only 58kgs, he doesn't have much weight to carry up the hills. Riding since the age of 12, he has participated in BMX Italian championships, but he says, let's forget about the results. You can be sure he had lots of fun though. Road cycling is now his passion and he rides all year around, including touring Europe with his next trip planned to ride from Florence to Amsterdam. In his spare time he runs his own guesthouse, so if you want some accommodation, he can even help you out there to. Leonardo looks forward to sharing the Rome that he loves with you.
Nino – RomeAntonino, or Nino for short was born in Sicily and has loved cycling since he was a boy, but it was when he met colleagues with a shared passion that his cycling really took off. It gave him a new approach to road cycling - enabling him to comfortably ride for 3 - 4 hours in a consecutive session with 100 km rides and some 1500 mt elevation gain. With his colleagues Nino has recently taken part in some exciting charity rides such as the 2013 Paris to Amsterdam & 2014 Amsterdam to Frankfurt rides, riding 400+ km in 4 days! As the 'go to' person on the charity rides, Nino is well versed in helping less experienced riders deal with difficult times so he is a great guy to be cycling through Rome with. When he can't ride his next love is skiing.
Carlo – Rome
Carlo was born in Rome, lives in the east of the city and knows the local roads very well. He’s been cycling for the past 11 years & more seriously within the last two years. Over the past few years he has enjoyed the beauty of cycling in charity rides between various European cities, such Paris - Amsterdam 2013, Amsterdam - Frankfurt in 2014 and in September 2015 Frankfurt - Zurich. He also participates annually in various Gran Fondos to keep up his competitive spirit and he really loves the emotion and intensity that longer rides bring. Not only does Carlo love to cycle but he also loves to share his cycling knowledge with others.
