Rome – Castel Gandolfo Lake
78 km - 1,538m / 48 mi - 5,045 ft - Weekly Ride - Sundays
- Region EMEA
- Country Italy
- City Rome
This ride is run CCW starting from downtown Rome; crossing the S. Callisto catacombe area and then joining the new and faster Appia road which will take us to the base of the volcanic lake of Castel Gandolfo (also known as the Albano Lake) from here, leaving the main road, we will start climbing through narrow paths, free of cars, until we reach the shore of the lake and it’s beach. The climb continues up to the base of Monte Cavo (950mt above sea level) until we reach a way point: from here we can continue the ride and visit characteristic small towns known for food and wine, and then climb up to Nemi, the beautiful village over its lake (where strawberry is the fruit most cultivated and sold in particular varieties) and then reach the waypoint again.
However, climbing time is not yet over! we turn right and start the ascent to Monte Cavo but instead of reaching the top we go to Rocca di Papa, then Frascati and we start the descent to Rome by riding the circuit that roman cyclist use to train, a few km more and we’re back to downtown.
As this whole area is famous for it’s vineyards and wine, this itinerary is ideally ridden in September and October when the harvest is running, but of course all year around this ride has fascinating sights.
All the rides in Rome are amazing, it’s hard to choose which to do:-

Leonardo – Ride Manager Europe – RomeAs his photo indicates, Leonardo is a local character and great rider for GCR in Rome. He is also our Ride Manager for Europe. As an A grade club rider and weighing only 58kgs, he doesn't have much weight to carry up the hills. Riding since the age of 12, he has participated in BMX Italian championships, but he says, let's forget about the results. You can be sure he had lots of fun though. Road cycling is now his passion and he rides all year around, including touring Europe with his next trip planned to ride from Florence to Amsterdam. In his spare time he runs his own guesthouse, so if you want some accommodation, he can even help you out there to. Leonardo looks forward to sharing the Rome that he loves with you.
Nino – RomeAntonino, or Nino for short was born in Sicily and has loved cycling since he was a boy, but it was when he met colleagues with a shared passion that his cycling really took off. It gave him a new approach to road cycling - enabling him to comfortably ride for 3 - 4 hours in a consecutive session with 100 km rides and some 1500 mt elevation gain. With his colleagues Nino has recently taken part in some exciting charity rides such as the 2013 Paris to Amsterdam & 2014 Amsterdam to Frankfurt rides, riding 400+ km in 4 days! As the 'go to' person on the charity rides, Nino is well versed in helping less experienced riders deal with difficult times so he is a great guy to be cycling through Rome with. When he can't ride his next love is skiing.
Carlo – Rome
Carlo was born in Rome, lives in the east of the city and knows the local roads very well. He’s been cycling for the past 11 years & more seriously within the last two years. Over the past few years he has enjoyed the beauty of cycling in charity rides between various European cities, such Paris - Amsterdam 2013, Amsterdam - Frankfurt in 2014 and in September 2015 Frankfurt - Zurich. He also participates annually in various Gran Fondos to keep up his competitive spirit and he really loves the emotion and intensity that longer rides bring. Not only does Carlo love to cycle but he also loves to share his cycling knowledge with others.
