Ride Description

Madrid – Río Manzanares, Casa de Campo and El Pardo

45 km - 720m / 29 miles - 2362 ft - Daily Rides - Monday - Tuesday - Wednesday - Thursday - Friday

Madrid is regarded as one of the greenest European cities and on this ride you will find out why. It is a short but complete ride of approx. 45 km which can be ridden in 2 hrs based on an average speed on the flat of 25km/h. (Keeping in mind that we stop at red lights and slow down and abide by bike lane etiquette getting in & out of the city) We start at The Palacio Real de Madrid, the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, in the heart of the city. Leaving the palace we traverse the Casa De Campo, a large urban park, before picking up the Anillo Verde bike lane for a safe route out of the city, which take us to the more open traffic roads at the city border.
Climbing La Quinta del Duque de Arco provides a good opportunity to stretch the legs and test yourself against some of the local times set. We regroup at the top where there is a small palace with a pretty formal garden and excellent views of the whole park as well as the four towers of Madrid – a reminder of how close we are to the city centre.
Next we enter the small village of El Pardo, former residence of General Franco, where there is an opportunity to refill water bottles or take a coffee in the village square before climbing out of the Park, taking in the amazing views of the Sierra de Madrid mountains in the distance. We return via the sleepy district of Mirasierra and pick up city bike lanes again, before entering the leafy green Casa de Campo and arriving back at the starting point.
The surface of the road varies from the bike lanes to good concrete road tarmac, up to grey old fashion asphalt of countryside roads. There are no particular difficulties in this ride although it includes a reasonable amount of ascent over a short distance.

Ride Leaders

Carlos – Madrid

For Carlos once he started seeing all the roads he drove on as possible cycle routes, he realised he had fallen victim to the 'road cycling curse'. He's been riding since a teenager, but as an adult rider, he has been keenly involved in cycling clubs activities and long distance routes, which in Spain, definitely means climbing mountains! For Carlos, climbing hills in the beautiful natural surrounds of Madrid is one of the most rewarding experiences cycling provides. The Alps, Pyrenees, and Spanish mountains are some of the places that he visits at least once a year. However, he also appreciates an easy route with friends telling jokes & visiting cyclist cafes ask for the local speciality for riders, “coffee with milk with tomato and olive oil toasts”. Tempted?

Jon – Madrid

Jon has been riding a bike for as long as he can remember and has competed on numerous occasions in many of the European classics including The Marmotte, Liege Bastogne Liege and Spain's most famous event The Quebrantahuesos - The Spanish Bonecrusher! Since relocating to Madrid several years ago Jon spends most weekends cycling with friends or with his local club. He's equally at home riding on the front or at the back of the group and what he most enjoys is exploring the quiet mountain roads on the outskirts of Madrid with like minded passionate cyclists.
