Sintra is know as one of the best places to ride a bike in Portugal and you will find why after this loop. It is a complete ride of approx. 72km which can be ridden in 3,5 hrs based on an average speed of 21km/h. The ride hits up one longer climb and a couple of shorter but step climbs. Gorgeous views through the atlantic beaches as well as beautifull forest roads in the first section of the ride.
We leave the old town and hit the serpentine Pena climb up to the ridge road. This quiet forest road is a carrousel of short up´s and down´s that ends with a section between walls. The road surface quality is excelent. A scenic descent along the forest road takes us to the coastal area and it´s small surfing beaches where we can stop for a picture and energy bar. The coastal road diverts to the inland rural scenario and into a more flatish area just until the steep section towards Magoito beach. Then it´s time to get ready for a high speed pace all the way to Colares wine region, it´s vineyards and, of course, it´s wineries. Time for an energy boost before climbing the “New Queens Road”, a beautiful old road passing along old estates and a few Palaces from the eighteen-hundreds. Once back in town we only have two short and steep climbs until we are back to the starting point.
The rides in Lisbon are unsurpassed, choose your next ride here :-
