Yorkshire can rightly herald itself as one of the top cycling destinations in Europe. Not only did the visit of the Tour de France exhibit the amazing roads, climbs and scenery of the region, it has now been chosen to host the World Road Cycling Championships in 2019. There’s no better time to come cycling in Yorkshire and experience it for yourself!
This route covers some of the best roads, climbs and variety of scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Catch the train from Leeds to Ilkley and start the ride in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside in the Wharfe Valley.
You are immediately out onto quiet minor roads and the route soon passes the historic Bolton Abbey, a 12th century abbey. Plenty of minor undulations now follow on the road over to the majestic rock face of Malham Cove and famous road climb where you can compare your strava time against some of the best climbers in the UK. As you reach the top you will see the unique limestone pavement that featured in one of the Harry Potter movies.
A bleak yet inspiring section of high moorland takes you to the swooping descent into the untouched ‘hidden gem’ of valley, Littondale. It’s then a scenic roll back down the Wharfe Valley to Ilkley on roads used in the 2014 Tour de France and the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire.
