Ride Description

Ride Description

Only one word is needed to describe this ride: awesome! Departing Denver and heading west, riders will enjoy fast flats on finely paved roads. Then, upon reaching the foothills in Golden, CO, riders will tackle Lookout Mountain. This 4.5 mile climb is a favorite of cycling enthusiasts worldwide and was featured in the 2011 and 2015 USA Pro Challenges. After a few fun descents, riders will embark upon Grapevine Road. This challenging stretch of roadway is set back in the mountains and features rolling hills, a small stretch of gravel, and tricky switchbacks. Riders will exit into Bear Creek Canyon for another fun descent into the beautiful and legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre! In addition, cyclists will pass Sports Authority Field (home of the Denver Broncos) and Coors Brewing Company, will ride through historic downtown Golden and the Colorado School of Mines, and will catch a glimpse of the Boulder Flatirons. For those interested, you’ll be able to measure your strength and speed against many of the local pros using the following Strava segments: “I am Scared of the Ghost”, “Applewood Allez”, “Illinois Street Climb 14th to 18th”, “Lookout Pillars to Post”, “descent to red rocks”, “32nd kipling bump”, and “32nd Ave (Lamar to Depew)”. Next time you’re in or around Denver, be sure to take advantage of this exceptional cycling opportunity!

If you haven’t got time for this ride, the Downtown Golden is a great shorter alternative whilst in Denver.

Ride Leaders

Jake – Denver

Jake is an avid road cyclist and enjoys fast sprints, long climbs, and speedy descents. Fortunately for him the diverse topography in the greater Denver area makes all of this a possibility; at times, all in the same ride!  One of the reasons behind his move from Chicago to Denver was to take advantage of all the outdoor adventures on offer in Colorado. He’s been racing endurance events since 2001. Highlights from his experience include running multiple marathons, completing an ironman distance triathlon, and racing multiple different road cycling disciplines including circuit, hill climb, time trial, and criterium. In addition to leading rides for GCR, Jake works as a Wellness Consultant/Health Coach specializing in fitness and exercise - a profession he is very passionate about. He's also a big time sports fan and enjoys traveling.

Scott – Denver

Scott’s love of cycling began in the late 1970’s, racing BMX on a P.K. Ripper in western Colorado. In the mid-1980s, he was captivated by road cycling after watching professional racing legends such as Bernard “The Badger” Hinault, Alexi Grewal, Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter up close and personal at the Coors Classic.  As they raced over the mountains and through the city streets of Aspen, Vail, and the famed “Tour of the Moon” route of the Colorado National Monument (near his hometown of Fruita), he became enamored with the sport.  He briefly returned to the dirt when mountain bikes became popular in the late 1980's but ultimately returned to the road in the mid-1990’s and has never looked back.
Some of the rides Scott has done are the Courage Classic (Children's Hospital fundraiser, 13 consecutive years), the Copper Triangle, MS150, and the Triple Bypass, a single day ride covering 120 miles and 10,000 feet of climbing through the Rocky Mountains.  When not riding, he loves fly fishing and an occasional round of golf.  Scott’s professional career covers more than 25 years in the financial services industry, ranging from lending and insurance to wealth management and venture capital.  “As a third-generation native of Colorado, I love introducing visitors to Colorado.”
